Advanced Decoration Short Course – 5 Weeks
Starting Wednesday 10th November 9:30 am – 12:30 pm
The Advanced Decoration Short Course will show you how to do a variety of more advanced decoration ideas, some traditional decoration techniques, and how to layer techniques for effect.
You will need a variety of already made work as this course does not focus on HOW to make your work. the forms required are all simple and merely a vessel to try the decoration techniques. Look below for the work you will need to have prepared:
Week One
- TEXTURE
- Shellac/wax/resist to create texture
- Carving and piercing
- Make your own textures
- Design with texture
- Using underglazes, oxides and glazes with texture
You will need – three or four small leather hard items, plus one or two small items that have some kind of texture that have been bisque fired
Week Two
- ENGOBES
- Creating texture with slip
- Using colour
- Paper transfers with engobes
You will need – a few small leather hard items – one or two will be made in class – please bring some white clay and some coloured clay!
Week Three
- ADVANCED LAYERING
- Using multiple techniques
- Planning layers
- Design aspects of layering
- Work flow for layering
- Using Washi transfers
You will need – several leather hard pieces, we will make a few items in class – please bring some white clay
Week Four
- UNDERGLAZES, OXIDES, GLAZES
- Advanced underglazes, using as over glazes
- Majolica
- Using oxides – commercial or raw material
- Advanced glazing
You will need several fairly plain bisque fired pieces – bowls and cylinders
Week Five
- LUSTRES & DECALS
- Using commercial decals
- Using lustres and metals
- Firing cycles for lustres and decals
- How to use them uniquely
You will need – a bottle of metal and or lustre from Picasso’s, glaze fired work in plain colours or some of your work that has come through already – a small amount of decals will be provided.

Your course includes all firing and most materials (not gold or lustre) – washi, some decals, glazes, slips, etc., all included.
